Statement of Intent

To develop a consistent brand identity and appeal to a target audience of 16-25 year olds, I will narrow the focus of my music magazine to predominantly females. I chose a female audience to be the niche focus of this product because feminism and gender equality is an important social movement amongst young people aged 16-25, so I felt that it would be relevant to societal contexts and also appeal to young audiences. I will do this by using only women for my main images. In order to ensure my images represent multiple social groups, I will use models from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. I intend to carry a black and pink colour scheme across all of my products. Pink has traditional connotations of femininity and sweetness, whilst black has connotations of darkness, mystery, and danger. By using these colours side-by-side, I can ensure that my magazine shows appreciation of traditional femininity whilst simultaneously subverting harmful stereotypes, furthering the brand identity. I will use slightly different colour schemes for each cover, such as red, yellow, or purple, as well as on each editions corresponding contents page, but I will keep the black and pink theme throughout the website. I will use fonts from “DaFont.com” to create a house style for my magazine, using the same typography across all of my products. I will take influence from other music magazines such as NME and Rolling Stone, as well as fashion magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan to create a stylish design for my covers that young females will find appealing and still fit codes and conventions of a music magazine. To further the female representation across all of my products, I will create coverlines that discuss female-related topics within the music industry – such as the Riot Grrrl genre and concert fashion. On my website, I plan to include an “About Us” section that outlines the female empowerment ethos behind the magazine.
